Alexandra Ivy - My Lord Vampire

In the first of a mesmerizing trilogy, Alexandra Ivy, author of the Guardians of Eternity series, introduces the Immortal Rogues--three vampires duty-bound to protect their own kind even as they fall prey to mortal desires. . .
Centuries have passed since Gideon Ravel dwelled among humans. Now he must infiltrate the cream of London society to earn the trust of one woman. Simone, Lady Gilbert, possesses an amulet of unimaginable power, and no concept of the threat that surrounds her. The ton's gossip prepared him for her beauty and wit. But he is blindsided by her barely disguised sensuality and his growing need to possess her. . .
None of the idle aristocrats who vie for Simone's attentions know about her past. To them, she is the sophisticated, worldly widow known as the "Wicked Temptress." The truth would ruin her, and she has never been tempted to reveal it until now. Yet beneath Gideon's bold, black-eyed stare is a hunger that demands satisfaction and complete surrender. . .and a secret far more dangerous than her own. . .

Comment: This book as a birthday gift and because it wasn't too big, I decided to get to it right away instead of my usual MO of letting books languish in the pile. I've read the author before so I knew what writing style to expect but the reviews on goodreads didn't seem very hopeful...

This is the first book of an historical trilogy (Immortal Rogues) where three vampires come from The Veil (a sort of different dimension, that ms Ivy's readers recognize from her other series) where older vampires live in peace, without the effect of mundane things like hunger or anger. But mad vampires have run from The Veil and three others have the task to get them back and protect three human ladies who own a medallion that would switch powers to the evil vampires. Of course, each good vampire will protect one lady and in this first book, Gideon has to find a way to make Simone, lady Gilbert, to trust him and not fall prey to Tristan, the evil vampire after her.
But Simone has secrets and she is reluctant to be seduced by Gideon, but how long can she pretend she's not interested?

Overall, this story had all the ingredients to be another great paranormal, even more so with the historical setting. I confess I appreciated some scenes and ideas, namely the way Gideon and Simone seemed to be at odds in the beginning but were falling in love and that there was no rush into sex as it happens with many vampire books. But apart from little details, I can't say this was a show of amazingness.

In my opinion, the book felt like a bunch of clichés and ideas put together. Sure, the story worked out and delivered a good enough romance, but there's nothing about it that can make me think this is amazing or new. In fact, all the ideas have been used countless times in several books. I don't know how the author thought about this trilogy, but I recognize the usual ideas and perhaps her goal was to find formulaic concepts in romance and use them for this trilogy, I don't know. But three good vampires, a warrior, a rake, a scholar paired up with three ladies seems like the basics of any romance trilogy out there. I'm actually interested in the second pairing so I might keep going with this trilogy one day.

Gideon and Simone seem to be a good couple, they felt the other was simply a task to go through, to endure but it was fun to watch them bicker, although Gideon's expectation he could go to her house whenever he wanted started to annoy the contemporary girl in me.
Their romance was more subtle than what I imagined it would, we se them fall in love but because the story read almost automatically, I never felt I was truly invested in them, so although I liked they found happiness, I didn't bit my lip in a nervous expectation to see it happen.

The plot isn't very difficult to solve, which is another clue of how easy, in a way, this whole concept is. I assume the other stories will develop very similarly. I didn't like the bad vampire's POVs, but then again, I never do.
In the end, I think the two words that best define this book are "easy" and "predictable". It does deliver but it's nothing truly special. I think something unique and different could have turned this into something wonderful, but it wasn't so. It's not easy to find great historical paranormals. It didn't leave much of an impression in my head even if the next story seems to be more intriguing for me, personally.

In the end, the romance and the plot development weren't strong enough to make me feel this was above average, but the author is talented and can hold on for a series and its steadiness, so in a way I wanted more from this story. It's not bad, but it's not special either and I predict I won't remember much of it in the following months.
Nevertheless, I think t's a good introduction to vampire stories and even those set in historical times.

Alexandra Ivy - Hunt the Darkness

The vampire, Roke, is raw, sensual, always in control. Yet somehow he's allowed the unthinkable to happen: a nymph-like witch named Sally has used her magic to trick Roke into mating with her. The pair will remain bound for eternity unless Sally breaks the spell. The trouble is, she has no idea how...
Mating with Roke was an accident; at least that's what Sally keeps telling herself. She's on the hunt for her demon father, whose identity holds the key to releasing the spell. The search won't be easy with Roke shadowing Sally's every move. As they mate with a ferocity that leaves them both aching for more, Sally isn't sure if her world is more dangerous without Roke—or with him...

Comment: This is the most recent installment of the Guardians of Eternity series by Alexandra Ivy to be released. There's another one to be out this year.

This is Roke and Sally's story. This couple first had air time on the previous book where a spell made them mates but when this book begins Sally has gone away to look for clues about the identity of her father, someone her witch mother never told her. But Sally's powers are changing and knowing who and what her father is might help her.
Roke is a chief clan, important to his people. He never wanted to be saddled with a witch but the spell is making him feel things he fast discovers might not be the only cause of his developing feelings for Sally. But after he finally gets to her, there's no escaping they need to find out more about Sally and their mating, which Roke no longer thinks about as a burden...

These books are easily read as stand-alones. But there are so many references and elements connected, that I think any reader only gains from reading them in order.
Of course, I can't say the writing is the most fascinating one. There's nothing wrong with it, the story flows, develops, moves along, but it's not addictive, there aren't enough amazing things to support the book beyond the usual paranormal romance. This doesn't mean it's wrong or bad, only that after a lot of books, despite some better and worse stories, in the end they all sort of feel like the same.

One thing positive to say about the author's writing is, she surely knows how to come up with new things, new characters, species, ideas, elements to the stories, connections. I can't tell whether it's from researching myths and mythical beings/lore or her imagination developing after an idea, but this worlds is populated by several types of beings, each ones with different characteristics, and everything together makes for an interesting mixing of things that give life to the books.

This story features a witch and a vampire so many tings from the myths of these beings show up in this story. It's interesting how Sally and Roke have to deal with specifications of what they are to work around their forced mating, but the truth is, being this a romance, many of those things also help to solidify a relationship, make them deal with each other, and this part I think was well achieved by the author.
The romance feels more balanced because there was that sort of introduction to them in the previous book, but Sally here seemed much more naive than before. I'm not sure this is fair to the personality she presented before, but anyway, they have a good HEA while trusting each other and what they need to do.

Some things are meant to matter to the plot but honestly I just thought them boring, like the mystery behind Sally's father started off as a good idea but ended up in boredom and more reasons to keep going with the series, as new characters are introduced. In the end the solution to the plot's main issue wasn't done in the way I thought best.
The bad guy also had air time here and I always find these parts annoying and useless, so I skipped almost all of them.

All in all, a good enough romance, basic plot structure's well developed but the overall feeling isn't one of amazement, it's more like we get what we expected, what we imagined would happen and the magic of everything just blends, doesn't surprise. Still, a series with a long life must count for something...

Alexandra Ivy - Darkness Avenged

As the demon world celebrates the defeat of the Dark Lord, the vampire Santiago’s mood remains bleak. He still yearns for the sensual, raven-haired Nefri, who has inexplicably disappeared. But brooding for Nefri is a luxury that Santiago does not have. His traitorous sire, Gaius, is unleashing a violent scourge upon the mortal world, and Santiago must stop him before it’s too late...
To her dismay, the all-powerful Oracles have sent Nefri on her own mission to find Gaius, and failure is not an option. Nefri’s search leads her to the vampire’s abandoned lair—and straight into Santiago’s path. It’s clear Santiago intends to seduce her, but then an ancient, banished evil reappears, threatening to thrust the world into a madness it cannot survive...

Comment: It's been ages since I've read a book by this author. Actually since 2013. However, I do feel happy I can still remember several facts and names despite not everything important.
This is the 10th installment in a series that has seen many years, and like the author herself said, that was quite the surprise.

This is Nefri and Santiago's story which, if memory isn't failing me, were important in the previous book as well, where their story was set up.
Nefri is a vampire who lived for centuries and after a rime she went with her family, community to another sort of dimension or place where emotions were ruled out so the vampires couldn't fall prey to feelings, maintaining control of their powers that way.
However, problems came up in the form of some villains, one of them Gaius, a vampire who should live with Nefri in their society apart from others. Since the previous book Nefri joined forces with Santiago, Gaius' adopted son, to catch him and save the world, sort of.

Well, I was amazed by how much I still remembered after two years of not reading anything by the author. Still, I can't say I was immensely happy about this book because, to be honest, it wasn't as good as some others I liked better. In this story, not only is the romance too boring, but the plot isn't very appealing to em either.

Truthfully, like some other readers, whose reviews I've seen, the best thing about this installment ended up being the setting up for the next book in the series. It will feature Sally the witch and Roke, the vampire and I'm actually interested in reading that one.

Apart from this, I can't say much about a story that really was boring and where not even the characters gave any strength to carry it over either.
The plot followed the same things we've seen in all books, the battle against enemies who want to kill the good guys or expose the paranormal world to humans or some other catastrophe. But the beauty in the books is how the couple usually bonds over their common goals and the feelings between them.
In this book, the plot was more of the same but there wasn't any other elements to support it through out so many pages where everything was boring.

The romance didn't appeal to me. Nefri is reluctant to admit she likes Santiago and I do understand her reasons, practicality, age, trying to keep things separate, not having to deal with it, it can be anything but if she were to be believable in her options all would be well. But Nefri gives in despite her actions and behavior and this, instead of telling me, she had feelings she didn't want to share - which is the reason behind her reluctance, only shows me she can be persuaded to gave up her ideas to be with someone. Sure he never forces her to anything but I wonder if she didn't feel more pity than love for him somehow. Of course this is never said, it's just my reading of their behavior.

In the end they get their HEA but it's weird, a bit unlike the majority and the idea they go to be together where Nefri lives sounds annoying after so much time with him trying to show her she deserves to experience feelings again and so on...
Anyway, this story seemed to focus more on the romance, which I didn't think was that great, but even this didn't make the book a winner for me.
I do have hopes for the next one and will be reading it soon.

Alexandra Ivy - Fear the Darkness

Beautiful Cassandra is a Were, a prophet both vulnerable and defiant, blessed with visions that portend the fate of the world. A rare and delicate creature, Cassie must be protected at all costs. Enter Caine, a powerful cur turned pureblooded Were whose recent tangles with a demon lord have left him in serious need of redemption. Caine is duty-bound to keep Cassie out of danger—and that means resisting his potent urge to seduce her.
As Cassie's mysterious visions lead them in and out of danger, Caine believes he has found his true mate, the woman with whom he is bound for all eternity. Cassie is both charmed and frightened by Caine's magnetism, and unsure if he—or her feelings for him—can be trusted. But Cassie can't afford to doubt Cain now. A deadly enemy bent on destruction is closer than they realize—and only they can keep chaos from ruling the world.

Comment: This is the 9th novel in the Eternal Guardians series. The adventures of a mixed group of supernatural beings and their fight against evil forces goes on in this story where the main couple is a pair of Weres, where the girl, Cassandra, is a prophet.

This book features Caine and Cassie.
Caine was a bad guy before, he tried to use magic to become a real werewolf instead of a cur, someone human changed into a werewolf. He also used violence and not so good methods to get his way. However, he was deceived too and learned from it. He decided to protect Cassie not only because something in her calls to him, but also because he feels it's the right thing to do after so many bad deeds.
Cassie is another of the four werewolf twins born. She is know for being a prophet and has been recently rescued from one of the villain's clutches. Se often goes anywhere her visions take her but she doesn't really know how interpret them. She isn't the best with social behavior but leaned to lean on Caine and her feelings for him have developed since they got together.

So, this book keeps up with the things happening since the first books. It had many sub plots added but finally the 4 sisters are rescued and happy with mates they love.
In this book the really bad guy on the scene since the last books has been beaten and by an unsuspected rival, no less. It will be quite the surprise, I'm sure.
This means the author has been tidying up plot lines and is now ready to keep the main storyline of wining fights against evil in a more larger dimension, I mean, the villains we knew are gone so I assume someone new will show up in order to keep the pace for the remaining characters - that we know must be next to have a story - to have something to fight against. I'm a bit curious about how that will be and thinking about who's next I assume some bad vampires, but let's see...
The romance in this book wasn't so bad I thought. They knew each other from books before, we knew they felt attracted, that they had a connection but they didn't take that next step until this book, so this means it didn't look rushed. I liked them, although some scenes between them were quite the cliché, but oh well, it's to be expected.
What I think was the best thing about this book is the way all the previous characters showed up to the final battle. Their books weren't just to get things over, it suited their power plays and abilities and it was fun to see them all together now despite the differences and the animosity among some of them in the past. Now they're joined in a common cause and goal and I liked how they all seemed important in a way, and their presence meant something even fr those with smaller tasks.
This isn't a book to think about or to origin philosophic thoughts. It's also not big on plot twists so people should read it thinking that. It's pure entertainment and it has to be seen like that. I liked it and it's part of a series I didn't think I'd like to keep up with but now I'm glad I did because it did offer many hours of fun reading.

Alexandra Ivy - Bound by Darkness

The Sylvermyst have a reputation as sinister cousins to the fey, and none are more mysterious than Ariyal and his tribe. To save his people from banishment, he sold himself to the evil Morgana. Finally free, he faces a new challenge: Jaelyn, an elite vampire warrior sent to capture him. By rights, he should kill her on sight. Yet he cannot bring himself to hurt her - or to resist her...
Jaelyn is stunningly beautiful, utterly lethal - and always alone. Until Ariyal. From their first encounter, she knows that what's between them is more dangerous than simple lust. And as they unite to thwart a terrifying prophecy that will mean the end of his clan and of the world they know, she will risk everything to fulfil her destiny by his side...

Comment: This is one of the series I'm trying to keep updated, so this month I've read another book part of the Guardians of Eternity.

This is the story of the sylvermist Ariyal, he's fae and was a slave to Morgana la Fey for a long time because he thought it was the best way to save his people as he was their prince. After Morgana died he and his comrades were freed and now Ariyal is determined to protect everyone from the Dark Master even if he has to kill the child rumored to be the incarnation of the Dark Master.
Of course, opposite him it Jaelyn, a vampire hunter with the mission to capture him. However, they didn't see coming the attraction between them or the need to know more about the other.

Considering the clues in the previous books, it was obvious these two characters would end up together. I was quite eager to see them fall in love especially because they seemed to fight each other all times and I imagined their relationship to be a challenge and a slow surrender. Err...not quite. They did seem to be at odds most of the time even when feeling the attraction but I didn't like that much the way they admitted their feelings. I wanted a bit more emotion, more flavor, after all they were fighting and trying to kill the other not a few days before, the whole think seemed rather rushed and unemotional.
The main plot is developing nicely. Many things happen and I think the author has been clever in managing all the threads in order to create a net of issues to solve without the reader feeling lost or thinking things don't make sense. In every book there's something happening and we see a bit of the previous links showing up, so we always know what has been happening in the following book. Although each one can be read as a stand alone, the plot has a sequence done well enough to do that and loose enough to make the reader have an idea of what is going on.
I like when secondary characters are still part of a series even if their story is done or to happen. It makes the story feel more alive, because no one is an island, right?
I don't think this is the best in the series. But I do hope the next one will be, because despite the good plot sequences, the romance sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.

Comment: These two books are written by authors I intend to keep following in 2013, specially because I'm behind on their work.

Devoured by Darkness is another installment in the Guardians of Eternity series. This time, it's Tane's turn to have a story, he's a vampire enforcer and punished the bad vampires, so many new vampires fear them and older ones stay away from him, which means he lives rather lonely, although he has social skills very valuable. His most recent mission is to follow a half jinn in order to know what she's hiding and that could help the vampires fighting the evil sorcerers around. Laylah is the jinn and she hides a child, but when meeting Tane she feels her life might change. While the two run from the bad guys, obviously they feel attracted and fall in love...I liked the book, but I have to confess it wasn't as thrilling as the other ones before. Still, some new things happened in terms of plot development and I was quite interested in what will happen, can't wait for the next story. The romance was fine but not the best in my opinion.

Scandal is another book by Amanda Quick and I must say it wasn't the best I've read, actually it is now one of my least favorites. The plot had everything to be a success, a man looking for revenge but falling for his intended, a young woman with a misunderstood scandal in her past and love around the corner, but I found Simon, the male protagonist, too obnoxious and brute at times to be really likable. The female protagonist was too naive although hopeful and I didn't see their relationship as balanced or romantic. I have many more books by this author to read, I have confidence all will be better.

Alexandra Ivy - Beyond the Darkness

Salvatore Giuliani is not a happy werewolf. It's his duty as leader to track down the pureblood females who can keep his people from extinction. But the moment he catches scent of Harley, a pureblood held by a pack of mangy curs, his savage need for her obliterates all other instincts. And the only thing worse than being captured is finding that beautiful, independent Harley defiantly refuses to become his mate.
Harley has been taught to distrust all Weres, especially their arrogant king. She won't be used for breeding or bonded against her will, not even to a man who makes every nerve tingle with awareness. Yet Salvatore is her key to saving the family she never knew she had -- if she dares to succumb to his dark, predatory desire, and face a vicious enemy sworn to destroy them both...

Comment: This is the sixth book in the Guardians Of Eternity series. It was finally time for the king of weres to have his story.

Salvatore is the king of the weres and looking for the pureblood sisters in order to find help to the weres because only purebloods can have babies and the four sisters are the only ones who are genetically changed not to shift so they can carry a baby full term. The weres race has been losing powers with time and not too many are getting born and Salvatore fears the end might be near.
Harley is one of four sisters and has been deceived by Caine, a cur looking for the way to be a pureblood and he kept Harley for her blood. Now Harley is found by Salvatore and together they run away to safety, especially when they discover Caine was also deceived by a were Salvatore thought was dead but with the help of demons, is back to kill Salvatore and end the race.

In this book, we finally see Salvatore finding his girl. We0ve known him since book 3 and I always thought he was too arrogant and conceited but of course, in his book we get a new perspective of his actions and the reasons why he is so dedicated to the weres. I can't say I like him better now, but I see why he acts the way he does and this gives a different light to his personality.
Harley is another of the 4 sisters and she's a headstrong person, she wants to live life the best way she can and after being kept closed in the house for so long, she wants to see what life has to offer. She and Salvatore get together and they give in to their attraction right away and at some point they admit they need the other, so there wasn't really any strong conflict in this. I think their romance wasn't one of the best because everything seemed too easy for them and they didn't act more in love for silly reasons. So, it really wasn't one of my favorites. Plus, they both had very strong and determined personality, which can be good but I like a little more vulnerability in my characters.
The overall plot was interesting and the author has lined up many of the sub plots in motion and some things got tidier, you know, so it's both easy to follow the story and it gives us a certain feel of closure in some things which is good. I can see where the author is going and I think this is one of her best features. I admit it, I don't think she's the best writer out there, but she knows her story, she knows where she's going and I have to say she's better at it than so many others.
I liked seeing so many characters and I'm curious over some of them, hopefully I'll read their stories soon.
This one was easily read but could have been better, in my opinion.

Alexandra Ivy - Darkness Unleashed

A scarred recluse, Jagr makes no secret of his disdain for others' company. But now, as a member of Chicago's powerful vampire clan, he has certain obligations to fulfill. The latest: track down a missing were pureblood and return her to her sister. The problem: Regan Garrett has no intention of complying. And though Jagr agreed not to harm an inch of this stubborn female's distractingly tempting body, he'll gladly kiss her into submission, awakening an urge he hasn't felt in years. Hell, in centuries...
Regan vowed never to be at the mercy of another man. That goes double for arrogant, steel-muscled vampires with eyes of ice. All Regan wants is revenge against those who imprisoned her. She doesn't need an ally. She certainly doesn't need a mate. But soon Regan will have to choose -- between a lust for vengeance, and a passion as dark and dangerous as the night...

Comment: Another book I had to read by this author.
This time it was Jagr's story. This character showed up in the previous book and was described as someone who liked to be alone, not very interested in all the society dealings. He isn't a lone wolf simply because it would be too much work to defend himself all the time.
In the previous book he was asked to help a fellow vampire and now their leader, Styxx, has asked him to help in a mission, to recover Darcy's sister ant o bring her to Chicago.
Regan is Darcy's sister, and like her, a werewolf too. She's finally free after thirty years of slavery to an imp and now she only wants revenge against him. She's lived alone in a cage for so long she doesn't think her family is something she needs, but deep down her spirit hasn't broken and eventually she will recognize she needs to know who her sister is and how can she be part of her family. What she didn't count on was Jagr, he's bent in taking her to Darcy, but while she knows this she says that she won't go until she's got her revenge which means Jagr will help her only to speed things up. However, nothing is as simple and they even have to deal with the attraction and growing feelings and respect for each other.

I liked this book, it was easy to read. I don't think it was spectacular because it felt like a script. Things had to be done and the characters did so but it was...it felt like they had studied the script and then acted. I wanted a bit more of surprises, of something different. But I can't say it's a bad story because things happen, and the main couple falls in love in a way I think was believable, considering the time it took them.
The plot followed a certain continuation from the previous books. It can be read as a stand alone, after ll authors usually write things in a way to allow exactly for that, but I think many things are better understood if the reader has read all the books that come before. For instance, Regan was rescued and dismissed by the king of the werewolves but we get a better knowledge of the reasons behind his actions in book #3 and I guess, in the next one, but having read the ones until his book will provide a better background.
I liked how some characters from previous books show up. I love this in books, I love to see them alive and well.
The romance was ok. Believable and interesting to see. It had a bit of that old "am I good enough for you?" vibe in the end, but things worked out well. It had a romantic moment here and there but nothing over the top. I kind of wished to see it, though...

I'll read the next book (my last one) next month. I hope it's good.

Comment: Sometimes what we think we'll find isn't exactly what we get and once again I was proven exactly that.
I've read the first three books in this series a long time ago and when I finished them the 4th one was still due to be released. At the time I thought the author's writing, although with interesting plots, wasn't seductive enough, at least compared with other authors I preferred. At the time, the blurb for the 4th book didn't appeal to me (in a way it still doesn't) because, generally, I don't like stories when the protagonists have met before, or were in a relationship before. As it seemed the case with this 4th book, I didn't buy the book when it was out, and neither the ones after.
After all this time (more than 3 years, without a doubt), I've decided to get back to it and see if my opinion might be different after I actually read the book.

Well, one shouldn't rally judge something before knowing it because I ended up enjoying the book. It wasn't the best thing I've ever read but it was good enough for me to not give up on the series and to regret all the time in between.
This 4th book is the story of Cezar and Anna. They met two hundred years before the action takes place and they were intimate then. However, Cezar had to leave and didn't have chance to explain things to Anna and after all this time she thinks he had done something to her because she doesn't age. The truth is, Anna is meant to be a powerful being and destiny put Cezar in her path to help her, but he was called before they could really talk. Now, two hundred years later she is ready to confront him and know what is happening to her.
During the book, Anna learns several things from her past and why is suddenly being chased and why so many attempts on her life are threatening her new found love.

Ok, so I ended up enjoying the book much more than what I thought I would. I had forgotten how intense the story could be, how many interesting things were happening in that world, although I'm happy to notice there were many things I hadn't forget from the previous stories.
The writing didn't become the best ever, but it was engaging and it allowed me to easily read the book without getting bored. Actually it only took me one day to finish it.
The two main characters suit each other. Their relationship wasn't as obvious as I imagined and it surprised me, I was captivated by how they feel in love with each other for real. Anna's past is more profound than what I thought and it provided interesting plot details because it made the story move along and it gave some mystery to what she is or what could become.
I liked it and now I'm curious to see if the next one is as good as this one. I hope it is, because I hate to give up on a series it took me so long to get to know.
