Comment: This is installment #23 on the Breed series by Lora Leigh. Since I've read my first book in this series - although not the first of the series -  many years ago, I've kept up to most of what has been released.

The story happens in the future and follows the saga of the Breeds, people created in laboratories where the scientists used the DNA of animals along with humans, supposedly to create special kinds of humans. However, there was a lot of chemical experiments which makes Breeds to be humans but with many of the animal features of whose DNA they carry. They have embarked on a quest fro freedom and have civil rights, have the law on their side now. The problem is that many of their enemies are still out there...

This is the story of Cassie Sinclair, which was introduced in the first books as child. Now, on book #23 we have her romantic story, something the fans have been waiting for.

For some books now, hints on who would be her mate have abounded but I don't think it was any surprise to any fan who the hero of this book is.

Apart from this, the book is heavily centered on the "never ending" and ongoing battle to help all Breeds out there and, on a slightly secondary plot, the hero's family history. 

Some details were not unexpected, after all the hints have been there, but I'd say the biggest reasons why this book wasn't as amazing as it could to me are very simple: the series is very long and too much time passes between installments and nothing seems to have any closure.

Cassie has always been special, has managed to offer support to other characters and is cherished by practically everyone. When, in a previous book, readers got a clue on who could be her mate, theories and ideas were quickly discussed and, had her book been published soon after that, I'm certain it would have had a bigger impact.

However, it feels as if the series has lost steam. I say this in the sense that perhaps PNR and erotica aren't a mix that is as trendy or as flashy nowadays, so the series still makes an impression mostly on faithful readers.

It's been 18 years since the publication of the first Breed book. It's been 18 years following these characters and their special features, which the author so cleverly invented.

But recently, the focus on these books isn't the same and each new book keeps offering as many doubts and new problems as the HEAs accomplished. How to read this if not by dedication and faithfulness to the series? 

Personally, that is why I read it because it's not longer something I look for to do. I read each new book only for a small sense of duty and honor to the memory of what the series has meant to me. I do wish the author would get a move on with finishing the series... it would be better, I think, to write two or three more books to settle down the main arc - freedom and rest for the Breed's cause - and a few more key characters.

This feeling is what kept playing in my head while I finally read Cassie's book. Her special characterization no longer fills me with wonder, the character liaisons no longer make me invent theories about why this or that happens... It was, indeed, good to understand her mate's past and attitudes, to see them achieve a common ground. They mention love but apart from paranormal reasons and the whole "mate" issue, how could that be if they barely interacted before their book? Anyway, that doesn't matter, I'm just glad they found a shared bond.

When the next book comes out, I'll red it at some point. It's weird that I still feel invested enough to want to know what happens in relation to some plot points, even among all the distractions and the severely slow pace of every single book.

This book was OK, in the big scheme of things. It wasn't fantastic, though, and I hope the author manages to find real eagerness to finish the series eventually, but it's difficult to imagine this; Cross Breed was released two years ago and there is no information on new books, so...what to hope?

Comment: This is the first book in the Nauti series by author Lora Leigh, featuring a family living in Kentucky. This is the story of Rowdy and Kelly and how they went from possible sweethearts to solid couple.

Rowdy and his two cousins have had quite a reputation among the people in their hometown. However, they are good people and they take care of those they consider friends and family, including Kelly Benton.

Rowdy has always had a ting for Kelly but she was only 16 when he started to pay attention to her so he goes to the military to be away from her. Of course, he never forgot about her and even thinks of the day they can finally be together. When his time with the marines ends, he decides it's time to start a relationship with Kelly but he is surprised to find out that while he was in his last mission, Kelly was attacked in her house and almost raped. Can they now talk and become a couple? Is the man who attacked her going to let it go?

A little bit of history.

I've started to read erotic novels and things outside my usual comfort reading around late 2007 and 2008. I started to buy more books online which allowed me to read a lot more genres and things not so easily found in my language and to find and buy those books in english really started to make a difference.

Lora Leigh was an author that got on my radar for her supposedly taboo types of plots. I gave in to some of these books before adventuring into m/m, which I came to appreciate immensely.

Way before even having the blog, I already had read some stuff by this author, namely several books in her back list. So far, besides this title, I've also read several books in her Breeds series and the Men of August trilogy, being that all have erotic content but the Breed series is fantasy/sci-fi and he other books contemporary.

All this to come back to this book.

It had been in the shelf for twelve years, actually, since I got it in 2008. Now that my general taste for erotic books has disappeared (I might read an erotic novel but only if it has been in the pile or if well recommended), this didn't feel like such a great story anymore.

It's true reader's taste can evolve/change but if a story is good, then it might still be enjoyable, right?

To me, sadly, this one turned out to not be good.

The story follows pretty much the same basics as the trilogy Men of August did, which is the main couple has a solid connection but they still have sex with one another somehow for some weirdly explained reason, here because the three cousins learned about sex with a mature woman and in the Men of August series to deal with trauma.

The author has a fixation with sharing and anal sex, which always is part of the erotic scenes somehow.

Besides this no longer feeling appealing to me, it is rather odd one would heal oneself with more sex, and if kinky, the better. I'm no expert myself and I did read other books when I was looking for erotic stuff where author would do this well, some character improving, healing, getting past trauma with the help of patience and therapy, a lover/partner who was considerate and a better experience with sex.

In this author's book things are not so obvious. Yes, this is escapism, this is not a book on proper counseling and therapy but the message... it's still there. I'm not even going to go into the whole rape thing because I think anyone would think of it as wrong and the fact in this book it was a means to and end, just.... I'd say that what could be seen as taboo or kink or dark erotica just felt wrong here.

Now, I could embark on this whole escapism idea had the plot been a fascinating one.

It was not, though.

Basically Rowdy comes back, goes on seducing an already willing Kelly despite her trauma, the cousins watch or whatever, they have plenty of sex and the bad guy is finally caught. There's no real plot. There's no real advance on the character's growth into better people. 

Therefore, lack of interest, lack of a plot, lack of character development and themes I no longer enjoy made for a very weak story for me.

I could have avoided reading but after so long, I'd feel sad I didn't at least try.

However, I have no plans on continuing with this author. I still have a book on the Breeds series to read, one I have been waiting for - like many other readers - and I hope that is a good one. As for the rest of her work, this is it.

Last two books of 2017

2017 is over and I'm already thinking about the reads of this new year but I also want to write a few sentences about the last two books I've read at the end of last month which I haven't got the chance to do yet.

The books are from different genres and authors but I was expectant to read both and I'm glad I liked what I got, even if Leigh's story could have been more interesting.

Wake a Sleeping Tiger by Lora Leigh

This is book #33 in the Breeds series according to GR. I liked the book, overall. Perhaps it's just my imagination but it did feel this boom was a bit more dedicated to what goes on the character's heads when it comes to their individuality and not as much their giving in to the mating heat, a detail that has been one of the key elements of the whole series. 

The idea now Breeds have a way to suppress that is certainly handy. I liked this because the sexual content is less and that makes room for more characterization, character's interactions and even plots to be more obvious. 

Still, it seems after 33 books we (readers) are probably around the same place when it comes to solving all the mysteries and finding all the hidden enemies out there.

The romance was the expected but I feel sorry the main characters don't seem to change that much from book to book. 

I would love the idea of change, of different settings and interactions among everyone, away from the norm. After so many books, it can be a little repetitive.

Grade: 6/10

Pretty Face by Lucy Parker

This is the second story in the London Celebrities series or trilogy and I really liked it! The first book, Act Like It, was probably the one I liked the best in the whole year so I was not surprised to also have enjoyed this one immensely.

Again, we have two different people, with different takes on life coming together and being paired up in this novel. Although there's an age difference, I think that didn't change the dynamics that much, the romance was imply beautiful. I really liked them together. 

The author's writing is superb, I'd say and somehow we are being convinced that the main couple really needs to be together, really is meant to be. The story is simple, the conflicts not there just because, the simplicity of it all just adds up to the fascination.

The dialogues are witty and believable, the situations portrayed interesting and the way each one of them reacted to everything was compelling. Liked their personalities as well.

I'm eager to read more by the author, without a doubt.

Lora Leigh - Bengal's Quest

Comment:  So, this is the most recent installment in the Breeds series by author Lora Leigh.

This series has been around for a long time and this title apparently is #30. Talk about a long series... I've started the series in book #7 or something and it has been interesting, some books had a more interesting main couple than others but I've been holding on because as it happens with the majority of series where we don't love everything, I still feel curious about certain characters and keep reading in hopes of reading or knowing more about them...

This 30th story finally tells us the story of Gideon, a Bengal breed that has been hiding from the Genetics Council and confusing everyone for some books now. Known as Graeme, he only wants revenge and finally claim his mate, but even her isn't who she always said and only recently the truth about her identity has come to live.

There are still things to uncover though, and Graeme wants to make sure nothing gets on his path to destroy those who hurt his loved ones. But now that other situations have gotten in the way, can he still focus on his plans or the possibility of losing his mate is too great?

Ok, so I'll divide my comment in two parts, some thoughts I have about the book itself and then I'll say a few things about my view of the series as a whole so far.

If one is to bear in mind the importance of this book to the series, I'm afraid I have to say nothing much happens in terms of plot development and there is so much repetition of certain things that, to be honest, this didn't move anything along...

As for the interest on the book alone, I expected much more. The last books have been emphasized a lot on Gideon and his weird actions, all the mystery surrounding him and some more connected characters and, of course, their mates...but now that his story is here ad done...I feel disappointed, nothing really original happened.

After all the building up of expectations about what Gideon's story I was left waiting for the big news to be revealed, namely can they help Amber, are they close to defeat/bring down the Council and help Breeds more? Nothing really helps and now, coming out of nowhere (or if not I truly do not remember of reading it before) there are even avian Breeds! Plus spirits, dual personality, weird rituals that can certainly be the evidence of a culture but don't really help an already consulting world to expand. What bothers me is that after one more story we aren't any closer to see changes in what is happening in their world, it's almost like each book features a day or a week in the life of a character and nothing really happens. Many new things are suggested but when it comes to solve or explain things...nothing.

After having read this book I didn't learn much about the world, despite a strong world building nothing moves along and although we finally see Gideon and Fawn, or Claire or Cat or whatever her name really is, together, in terms of plot we got more of the same, mate stalking mate, mate running from mate, mates mating and mates saying they will have a HEA.

Gideon and Cat (her real name apparently) do find happiness and surprise, at the end she finds out what she was told about her family was a lie. I understand the need to improve a bad situation somehow and amaze the reader but nothing is convincing and this story isn't original, it's so repetitive...

I feel I can only criticize but the reality is I've read many books, some of them have interesting details and scenes but I wanted more than the same old issues and matings that we know always happen. The key goal here is to make laws to protect and enable Breed individuals to live safely, to have rights, to raise families, to be inserted and welcomed in society... we get many pages saying how difficult it is and how the Council and their minions/collaborators/assassins/spies/all evil or antagonists people try their best not to allow it. But we barely see the daily lives of Breeds, we rarely see their family bonds except if pertaining to the key couple, we only glimpse how they teach their young, how they live, their domestic lives, the sort of things that would help the reader have a general idea of what is supposed to be the goal here.

I can suppose the author goes along at a very slow pace on purpose or it's just her style, but it gets tiring... ok, I guess I could give up, not read more but the thing is, I feel we get enough to be curious, to have our interest focused on so many little things that we can't help but wanting to know if things will be ok for the Breeds. And I do and I want to see three or more characters have their HEA... but it's a task now, which gets the fun out of it for the most part...

Then there's this tactic of just letting us have a scene, a look, a tease and then countless books to reveal us more...

I apologize for my rant-like comment, I still like the majority of the series' content, the characters...but it's all getting so repetitive and long without real changes and that's it...

I hope the next one is better. A very, very average book for me.

Lora Leigh - Rule Breaker

Lion Breed, Rule Breaker had just a few rules he didn't break. Not for anything. Not for anyone.
#1. Never have sex with a woman outside his own subspecies, especially a human woman.
#2. Never, at any time, accept a mission concerning a female when Jonas Wyatt stinks of a lie.
#3. Run don't walk, skip or stumble. Run, hell for leather away from any female, human or breed, when his desire for her appears, in any way, to have so much as a single sign of Mating Heat.
Now, the woman believes he's mated, is too helpless, to fun loving and too full of life to ever be able to protect herself, let alone aide him in protecting her.
If the damned animal inside him insisted on a mate, then why pick the woman it did? One that could be struck out at, at any time?
But, what he suspected was a mating, may not be. No swollen glands? No heat? Just his animal instincts rioting, pacing, irritated whenever he's away from her.
Okay, he could handle that.What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the breeds when Jonas learns she's possibly been working against them.

Comment: This book was released recently in paperback format and, being a fan of the series, I got it and wanted to dive in right away. This series, the Breeds, has caught my attention years ago and I still feel curious about the main plots even though the romances have became too predictable.

This is the story of another lion breed character, Rule Breaker. His Lawe's twin and one of Jonas main enforcers who will have a sort of promotion in this book. This character has always been mysterious because our glimpses of him have been short, so I was curious about his story and mate.

Gipsy survived years ago from an almost rape by the breed who killed her older brother. She has dedicated her life since then to catch the person who betray them. But she didn't count on Rule being her mate and the fact she fight it will have consequences.

Two things we can expect without any doubt in this series plot lines: lots of sex and heroines who think themselves above any lust and who give in way too fast.

While I skip the first for the most part - the scenes just don't mean much anymore considering how repetitive and general they are - I always have hopes the next book will show a heroine with a different mind state. Although I respect heroines who think they can battle the expect lust we see in relationships in these novels, I always end up disappointment when they give in too fast. I can understand why, all those hormones and stuff, but his makes the books look the same, in terms of main romance. And while I like there's a HEA and they end up on the same level and relationship pace, I still wrinkle my nose by how fast the women go from reluctant to sugary and the men from distant to everlasting dedication. I think a bit more human feelings might help instead of just lust ignition.

In this book, those things happen, as expected. Still, I think Rule played a game I wasn't thinking he would, plot wise, I mean. It offered quite the look into his character and it allowed some difference to show up, something I didn't see coming, which was refreshing.

Gypsy, his mate had a lot to overcome and she chose a path that, truthfully, I had some trouble following because if there is one thing abundant in these novels is the links and hidden meanings and sub plots. Gypsy saw herself in the middle of one and she never thought she would have much help but of course Rule was there to support her even if he acted the part of the breed-who-was-running-from-the-mating.

Gypsy and Rule's relationship starts with the usual cat and mouse games but eventually they get their game together. However, apart from the hormonal connection they can't run from, I don't think we saw enough of them as a couple, emotionally speaking. We read about it and we were told about it, but as always, I think there is a lack of scenes where we can see them be a couple outside the sex. I think it would add the emotional level I believe the author wants to portray but which I don't think is always obvious or successfully done.

Still, I was happy they had a HEA even if a bit fast at the end.

The plot...well, what can I say, we see developments which is amazing, and I do hope things will start to be solved. I know there are lots of characters to have a story but I think if the author would just solve the mysteries once and for all and would tell the remaining stories she wanted as just plain romances wouldn't be bad. Just my opinion, after all I want to know something conclusive happens at last.

We see many beloved characters in the story, lots of possibilities are hinted at and I liked that. The romance could be better but overall, I liked reading the story and I hope the next one can be more decisive and objective.

Lora Leigh - Stygian's Honor

Window Rock, Arizona, is the last known location of Honor Roberts, who vanished when she was just thirteen. It was her only sanctuary from the Breed research that would surely have ended in her death -- one such insidious experiment should, indeed, have killed her. That she lived is both a miracle -- and a great mystery.
Stygian’s mission is to find Honor Roberts, no matter the cost. Now, with the help of Liza Johnson, assistant to the chief of the Navajo Nation, he is closer than ever to his goal. But will the discovery of Honor Roberts mean the destruction of the mating heat that has developed between Stygian and Liza?

Comment: This is the most recent installment in the breed series by the author. In this series she portrays a group of men and women whose genetics are mixed with those of wild animals and after they managed to run from the laboratories where their existence begun they spoke of it to the world. The same world now facing the truth and the need to adjust for these new beings, although many don't want that to happen and cross everything to control the breeds. Of course, romance still happens and often saves the breeds from their own destruction.

In this book we have the story of Stygian, he's a wolf breed, and Liza Johnson. Liza is rumored to have information about two young women the breeds are looking for because of some secrets the father of one of them might have had about a cure for a syndrome that is currently afflicting Jonas's daughter. But the cure will also help any other breed who might need it and if they can get the information before the evil Council the better. However, Liza swears she doesn't know anything about the two girls much less any secrets. Throughout the book we get the relationship between Liza and Stygian developing and her loyalties changing even more after she finds out some deep, strange secrets about herself and her cousin that their parents never told them. By the end of the book we're left with the same amount of questions although one or two are answered.

This book did offer some new things about the path the breeds are going through to secure their well being. It's all still very slow, it takes ages for anything to actually happen, I suppose all that sex gets in the way, but I knew from the start these books are more erotic than romantic, but after a while it kind of gets boring. Still, this isn't the worst one in that aspect because the relationship between them takes a while to get to the mindless sex stage, which I found helped me keeping focused in the story. Nevertheless, I'd love for the author to speed up in fixing and presenting solutions to the problems in motion. There are many breeds who need a mat, but surely we don't have to wait a dozen more books just to finish the ones in hand...do we?
I read these books more for the fun and the curiosity to find out about certain things I care about many of the characters, but the truth is, although they all live in a community, we rarely see much of the mated couples unless it suits the plot. I'd like to see them in another register, you know, tis is why I'd like for them to solve their issues soon, so the author could step up to another stage of their lives, like....I don't know...how to deal with happiness! Lol wishful thinking.
This book did offer many interesting things to consider, especially about a couple of characters and I'm eager to know more. There were many pages dedicated to plot development and for that I'm thankful. But they could have been more.
Overall, this wasn't the best book in the series I've read, after all the main couple didn't have any kind of central stage before so it's more difficult to feel as much empathy towards them as I did with other couples in the series, but it's certainly not the worst because it did make the plot move along.
I'm conflicted but tending towards the positive with this one. I hope the next one doesn't take too long because something is going to happen and I can't wait.

Lora Leigh - Lawe's Justice

Mating heat gives him the Heebie Jeebies. It makes his stomach clench. It makes his teeth grind. Not because he wants to avoid it.
Sure as hell not because he's searching for it and can't find it. No, it's the woman he's sensed is his mate, the woman that makes him insane every time they cross paths. The one woman he knows he can never, ever tame. The mercenary sister of Jonas’ mate, Diane Broen. And he doesn’t mean mercenary in the monetary sense. Oh hell no, he couldn’t be that damned lucky. Diane is the commander of a small group of rough and ready male soldiers. A woman living on the edge, and threatening to pull him over with her.

Comment: The latest installment in the Breeds series.
We finally have the story of Lawe Justice, one of the most important enforcers in the breed world. His mate isn't someone he imagined his mate could be, because Diane is a fighter, she doesn't sit at home, she goes out there into the fighting to help and Lawe's instincts tell him she should be safe. But if he forbids her from being who she is, can she be happy like that?
I liked the book a lot, mainly because we have so many details concerning the breed's fight against the scientists who hurt so many of them in the past. We get to know more things about genetics and especially about key characters that might be able to help the breeds. It's all very interesting and I loved seeing so many character's interact in the story.
To be honest, the romance was the thing that interested me the least, not because it was bad, but mostly because it was a bit predictable, so I knew Lawe would eventually accept Diane the way she is. We also see some things about themselves, about those around them and what it means for them to accept their relationship, what it will mean to be a team.
The story also follows the storyline of Amber, Diane's niece. Amber is a baby who shows some breed's patterns, although she is only human. I'm very interested in seeing if Amber can be helped and part of fascination is that this would mean more characters showing up and being a deisive part of future books.
I can't wait for next one, this feels like a soap opera and the only bad part is to wait for so long for next "chapter".

Lora Leigh - Navarro's Promise

She craves his touch. And as the breeds converge the past will rise up to haunt Navarro in ways he never expected.

Comment: My opinion about this series remains the same since I've read Styx's Storme last year. I wish I could see more new things, more developpment in the story, more plots, or at least some kind of decisions made in this one.

The romance in this book feels more of the same...the male doesn't want the mating at first, she acepts it sooner, nothing new there. I like the series, I do, but they start to be too much of the same, unfortunally. Mica and Navarro seemed different because of their conditions before mating; he's a recessed breed and she has known about breeds for a long time and while human, she accepts them for what they are. I liked seeing a human mate who knows exactly what she's getting into, but still, something more would be appreciated.

The evil dr Brandenmore finally has a finale, one the reader expected but still the answears to how to solve some problems are still to figure out, especially because he apparently knew how to solve them.

I hope new things start to appear...I mean, I don't want to see the series end and there are many characters that deserve a story, some I'm eager to see (Like Ely and Cassie and Rule - Lawe is next...), but I wished they didn't seemed repetitive. I think the author creates great sex scenes, interesting characters, but I wished I'd see more world developpment, more plot too. There are still so many things to be explained...

I understand the need to keep things slow in order to justify the incoming books, but it would be good if the author could focus more on the world instead of the sex... I know this is her style and the way the books are, but after so long, only the sex isn't enough.

Styx's Storm - Lora Leigh

Comment: This book isn't as good as some of the previous ones in the series. The description between the main character's relationship seems the same as the others. I wish there would be something different besides names and a main look on breeds from females (whether fear or caught in surprise). The males always act the same way too.
Apart from that, this story did bring something new at the end, it would be interesting to know more about it and we also get to see previous characters (especially from the Wolf breeds) and it was fun.
Besides this, nothing too amazing in this book.
